Rumble at The Strip: Picton Airfield - May 28 & 29

Postby schmoo » Fri May 13, 2011 9:35 am

If you've been, you know the joys of slaloms at 130kph. If you haven't been, you've heard the tales of a 3km long autocross course.

If you've been, you've experienced the camaraderie. If you haven't been, you've wished you had.

Good news! Your chance to kill three birds with one stone is here again. Run this one event and you get to:

1. say you represented MCO at a Regional and showed them how its done
2. run a classic, high-speed, SCCA-type course (according to those who know such things)
3. use a very high proportion of third gear
4. support our friends at St. LAC and the SPDA
5. have a damn good time

Now that you're convinced that you just have to go (all the cool kids are doing it), here is where you can find info on how to register for this Regional Series Double-header: http://www.casc.on.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=22152

If you have questions about classing (you thought MCO's approach was complicated?), post up here or at CASC and I'm sure a regionally-experienced conehead will help you out.

Saturday: SPDA Regional 2 / Sunday STLAC Regional 3
8:30 Drivers meeting
9:00 First runs out by run groups

Washrooms on site
Gourmet Catering Truck both days, on site
Wonderful scenery (at the HayLoft) in beautiful unpolluted Picton Ontario

Cost: $30.00 / day
Supplemental Regulations for the event: http://spda-online.ca/modules/newbb/dl_attachment.php?attachid=1304530252&post_id=43719

Here is googlemaps location for your reference: http://tinyurl.com/6clu67k

I'm hoping to go Sunday. It all depends on weather... I want to turn last year's mostly bald R888's into truly bald baloney skins but since I don't have a trailer yet I have to drive there and back. Baloney skins might get me killed if it rains.

Fingers crossed for no rain!

I noticed on the CASC and MCO Safety Checklists that it asks if you've changed your brake fluid in the past 6 months. I get that this is a nice to do, particularly if you run a higher dot type fluid, but is this absolutely necessary to do in order to race at the MCO and CASC events? Or would it suffice to simply check that my fluid levels and condition are in good shape?

I ask because I have next to nothing in kms on my car and don't have a brake fluid change on my maintenance schedule until a couple years out.

Brake fluid absorbs water whether it is being used or sitting. The water in the brake fluid does 2 things: it rusts out the lines from the inside out and causes a spongy pedal. A very good rule of thumb is to change it every 2 years without question.

You should be good to go with the 2010 model. You should be looking to change it next year though.

Word Bruce!

The Suby maintenance plan seemed a bit generous in terms of how much time they give between brake fluid flushes. I was thinking of making it an every other year type thing so I'm glad to hear that works for the club.

See you guys in Picton!

Assuming the Miata is back and healthy - I'm in.

Otherwise I need to find someone stupid enough to loan me a car.

The Regional series has a 'self tech' form that needs to be acknowledged, they also have a series official perform a quick car and helmet check (mostly looking for loose batteries ... eh hum Pat... floor mats, helmets, and obvious loose/broken items). As Schmoo can testify, with the speeds, length, and bumps on course two days at Picton can be rough on you 'whip', and I would recommend that anyone going makes an effort to diligently check their car.

I'm in for sure.
Need to find a place to stay the night this week. Thinking cheap hotel in Kingston, as the Miata is not as roomy as the ol hatchback STI. Slept in the back of the Subie once, while camping, best sleep "evah".

Weird... just realised my daughter wa born nine months later... STI's are awesome.

Phil, let me know if you need a place -- between Chez Switzer and Rogerson Manor there are likely beds available.

The premier event held at the historic old Picton Bomer base. Yes, 3 runways strung together in one continuous loop of super duper rewarding exhilerating runs.

Located in scenic Picton Ontario in the heart of Prince Edward county. Come join us in this unique event.

Toyo Tires again is helping to subsidize the "Dinner Mingler" on Saturday Night at the worlds famous "Coaches" Patio and bar. All you can stuff in your faces for a low low low price if $10.00 bucks. Yup, that's cheaper than a date in a trailer park at senior Hawg Jawls.

Coaches: 251 Main Street West, Prince Edward, ON
(613) 476-5888 ‎

Google Maps link: http://goo.gl/maps/SBuC

Time 7:00 PM.

Yup, lots of fun for the entire weekend.

Saturday: SPDA Regional 2 / Sunday STLAC Regional 3
8:30 Drivers meeting
9:00 First runs out by run groups
Executive shuttles to and from the designated marshalling stations
Currah's fine cuisine for lunch with specialty gourmet choices
We're aiming for the minimum of 6 timed runs (Depending on the size of crowds) plus fun runs each day.

Course design courtesy of "Wong & Fryer and associates" (See attached)

The course will contain all the elements that we all crave fast, furious, and greater than 100 seconds. 2.6Km of Canada's fastest and most exhilerating autoslalom that's proven to deliver to the the adrenaline junky over and over again.

If you crave that leg shaking shortness of breath, this is the event to attend.

2 Full days of top class Autoslalom, plus world class gourmet cuisine, plus a "Dinner Mingler" at Coaches subsidized by the series sponsor (only 10 measly bucks), and you get to see live electrocutions!!! Amazing OH YEAH!!!

This is the event of the year, lessons learned has made this event better and better every year, and this year is no different. It will deliver!!

Please post here if you're attending the "Dinner Mingler" we'll need to know how many seats to reserve.

Are ride-alongs going to be permitted for drivers in the same class/car?

As far as we're concerned, we don't mind at all. I don't know about the rule books though, but I'll ask Andrew and post here.
