Things I learned at Calabogie April 30th

Postby ZOO » Sat May 01, 2010 7:52 am

Fantastic day -- thanks Chuck, Luke, Luc, Don, Craig, the new treasurer who's name I cannot remember, Pat, and many others. It was a terrific example of MCO collegiality and leadership.

Here's what I learned:

1. BMW M3s get much better gas mileage on the track than LT1 Corvettes.

2. Debris that gouges your front tire also gouges your rear tire. Luckily no structural or damage, just missing a chunk from the tread blocks.

3. Forced induction Miatas on 13 inch R888s are really fast.

4. I yield to Temptation.

5. Beak and throat are still giving me trouble -- I think I lose a lot of speed around them.

6. Shawn is crazy-fast through 4Left.

7. The world looks better through a new windshield.

8. There are a few parts in the FM catalogue that Schmoo doesn't have, yet.

9. Nothing is open in Calabogie for breakfast before 8:00.

10. Having a Chatterbox makes instruction, and ride-alongs much more fun. Except when someone sneezes into it.

Once again, a huge shout-out to all the organizers who worked so hard to make the day run smoothly. I appreciate all that time, and it was a spectacular day. Thanks, too, to all participants -- everyone I ran with demonstrated sound judgment, and that makes it better for everyone.

Yes, thanks to everyone for a great day. My friend, who was riding along with me, was very impressed with the level of organization and how everything was run. The only thing lacking was coffee. Must bring my own next time.

Thinks I learned:

1. Go straight to sound check - only one car there when I arrived there, lots lined up when I left.
2. Slower through turn 3 means more speed on Rocky Rd.
3. Line up at the back of the grid in pit lane. Saves waving everyone by on the first lap!
4. I really must do something about the understeer...
5. Being a passenger in a fast STI makes me car sick. Nothing else ever has.

Main thing I learned over the weekend: Horsepower is a crutch I don't have the option of using :P

Other things:

1. If you can't see your back wheel in your side mirror, you can't see Radicals
2. James, Ian, and Steve come out of nowhere
3. Sideways through turn 16 at 100+ kph in the rain is a butt-puckering experience
4. 3 cars wide through temptation is an equally butt-puckering experience
5. Protege clutches take 45 minutes to cool down :P
6. Ground hogs have no business being in the quarry...

:) Thanks Rob! I'm glad you enjoyed yourself! +1 on the windshield... that's the one good thing that came out of it :P

Things I learned:

1. Don't start off a new season with a 3-day lapping event if you're hoping to finish it off with last year's tires
2. rain and old tires don't go well together and make for hairy moments on 9a
3. i love my car :)
4. i can never have too much lapping.
5. hood off helps a bit with cooling
6. mco is awesome, and their lapping days are the best.

Thanks again to all - it was a great way to start off the season!

Thanks so much to all the organizers and workers who made this happen. I've NEVER had more fun in car with a helmet on. What a great first experience at Bogie.

Things I learned:

1. Seat time is King: I may not have been much faster, but I felt way better Sunday afternoon compared to Friday.

2. Following is easier than leading: It was so cool following Steve and copying his lines. I could almost hang with him, but when he let me by, I was a spasming mess on the track trying to hold him off. I tried the same with Bill on Friday, but was still too unsure of myself to stand a chance.

3. Line coaching must be in a language you understand: I understand Shawn's verbals, Steve Fong driving, and I stare befuddled at my buddy Christian. ;)

4. I can go flat through Spoon and not brake for 4left if I don't think about it.

5. The Kink at 160kph is fun and that wall is less intimidating the faster you go.

6. East Track is just as much fun as the full track.

7. Don't follow a race truck through temptation.

8. I have some great friends in the paddock.

9. My safety is sufficient inspiration for Jeff to pull-off some driving brilliance.

10. My temp gauge is a switch and is useless.

Mrs. Schmoo would not have appreciated that very much.

I learned a few things too:

MCO members rock even more this year. Everyones getting really a lot faster and safer.
My cars pretty quick for a little V6. We still can get another sedond or so out of it on the east rtack and a lot more on full track.
The East track is a ton of fun too even for testing.
All those who signed up and ran the weekend had the best value for lapping days ever. Unlimited track time for two days.
People that step up to the plate for instructing just make everything go that much better. You know who you are and thanks.
Greg VanDalens exhaust pipes are boss but the cars too quiet lol.

That was a great weekend!

Although I only made it for the Friday I also learned a thing or two...

1. Shawn is crazy
2. Shawn should NOT be in the GREEN group
3. Exhaust leaks can blow your hood off
4. S4s are pigs

Pics in a separate thread...

I love these threads. Always so creative, always reminds me of what happened and always a great read.

1. A Miata with the engine light on can still perform at the track.
2. A Miata with a knocking engine, possibly won't last the whole weekend...
3. Schmoo has great driving techniques that I still don't agree with cause I might be jaleous.
4. Shawn and Chris are natural drivers, it seems
5. MCO people are great drivers even when rookies, great personalities and seem to be the best to be around at the track!
6. Confusion can happen if you're looking at the pit out guy from far away. Hint: Drive slow in the pits, the flag guy can wait...
7. Big wings on S2K's are funny, cool and functional at the same time.
8. Not having to change tires at an event is soooooo freaking awesome, my back loves it.

- it's fast.
- everything that I knew about where to look, brake, turn, etc. has changed
- it's very fast.
- When you're doing 230 at the end of Rocky Road, you need to press the brakes a wee bit harder than what you may be used to.
- I need tires, lots and lots of tires.
- Audi R8 ESP can make you look like Emanuele Pirro, Frank Biela or Marco Werner and you don't have to try.
- Did I mention it's fast? Ya, it's fast.
- I giggle, a lot.

I hadn't noticed

On a serious note -- that is a gorgeous car. Will (my son who was car hopping with everyone) was desperate for a ride along.

Next time, let me know. The squeakiest wheels get oiled - or in Guy's case whoever was nearby that had a helmet close to them.

Yeah, I went out in the R8. Man, it's fun ... grin factor for sure! Now I know why Clakson is such a happy guy, driving cars like that all the time. It's just another level!
