Calabogie - Ottawa Citizen Gentleman's GT Race Series

Postby Mechs02 » Mon Jun 06, 2011 5:46 pm

Hey everyone. Just to let you know, after seeing the Ottawa Citizen Mustang Race Series at http://www.calabogiemotorsports.com, I was extremely excited to get out there in my mustang, but I was disappointed that you could only run in a rented mustang, and the cost was certainly out of my budget. After discussions with a few other people that had the same frustrations, I started speaking with one of the owners at Calabogie Motorsports Park, and after a number of discussions over details, we managed to strike up a deal. It's pretty grassroots to for now, but i think that's half the fun! So may i present to you... the Ottawa Citizen Gentleman's GT Race Series!!! Details...:

THE OTTAWA CITIZEN GENTLEMAN’S GT RACE SERIES

Think you have what it takes to Race at Calabogie Motorsports Park. Why not test your racing skill in the Ottawa Citizen Gentleman’s GT Race Series. Limited opportunity!

What's a gentlemen's race?
It is all about camaraderie, safety, sportsmanship and just good fun! There will be specific passing zones on a fully marshalled track, so playing nice is mandatory!

How do I Qualify
1. You DO need to have been signed off to drive solo at Calabogie Motorsports Park, but you DON’T need a Race License. This entails having completed at least one full day at CMP with an instructor or equivalent.

2. You and your car must have an average runtime around the full track between 2:25-2:45.

3. You must be running a Hero Cam inside the car to record the race from the driver’s perspective. In case of the unlikely event of an incident on track, this will provide track officials with more information about the incident. Bonus: You get a video record of your race, and you can trade with others to see what it looked like when you passed them! 

4. You will require a SNELL Rated Helmet, M2000+ or SA2000+

5. Your car must adhere to the CASC-OR Ontario Time Attack Safety Specifications located in SECTION 1 here: http://www.casc.on.ca/sites/default/files/2011_time_attack_regulations_online.pdf
The annual inspection list can be found here: http://www.casc.on.ca/sites/default/files/2011_safety_checklist.pdf
Calabogie Race officials hold the final word regarding the apparent safety of a vehicle. If they feel your vehicle is unsafe for the event, your vehicle will not be allowed on the track.

*The preceding schedule is for the Ottawa Citizen Mustang Race Series. Should there be less than 4 registrants for the GT Race, the GT race will run on track at the same time as the Mustangs. Should we have 4 or more registrants, the GT class will have its run group run during the off time of the Mustang Series.

Prizes
With a minimum of 5 GT Class registrants for a specific event, there will be a $250.00 Calabogie Motorsports Park Gift Certificate awarded to the first place winner of that event.

This is currently a pretty grassroots event, so we are looking for other sponsors to provide prizes and/or gifts for either placed finishes (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Last) and/or for draws. If you or someone you know would be interested in providing prizes of some sort (gift certificates, cash, merchandise, etc.), please contact me at CalabogieGT@gmail.com

Race Rules
Race Rules Gentlemen`s GT Race (Subject to change)
1. Passing will be in specific zones and is by point by only, one point by per car. If you are the second car and don’t see a point by, you must wait until you do.
2. Under no circumstances is a pass to take place without a point by signal. Once you give the point by, you must let the car pass, you may not out drag it to the next corner.
3. Passing without a point by, or passing in a non-passing zone will result in a black flag, a warning will be given in the pit lane and a second violation will result in disqualification from that session.
4. Blue flags will be used to indicate a closing car. Repeated disregard for the blue flag will result in a black flag and a drive through penalty, so it’s not worth disregarding the blue flag.
5. This race is intended to introduce people to racing without the danger of car to car contact and drivers are expected to keep other’s safety in mind the whole time. We will do our best to not intrude on the racing with the blue flags but keep in mind that this series is a fun introduction, not the Montreal F1. Safety is paramount and we will pull anyone driving in an unsafe manner.

I look forward to this being a fantastic series this year, and for many years to come. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

For more information on the track or the mustang race series, please visit http://www.calabogiemotorsports.com

Thank you, and I hope to see you at the track!

Sounds interesting ... especially when my car gets put back together.

Question:
On a good day I'm doing the 2:25 lap time limit. What happens if I break out? I don't really want to sandbag, detune the car or make it unenjoyable for everyone else ... if you know what I mean.
'02 blk S2000 ---> still driver limited ;)

I'm sure that's flexible, they just want to get this going. besides, it says avg times, not a limit.

I read that as, no ariel atoms.

The Track sets this up the same way they run the Cup Weekend.

It isn't a Mustang :-). Nope, taking a break this year. I was just wondering whether ASN or CASC-OR or MCO was officially involved, or if it was another body like EMRA, or the track itself was doing things.

Looks like it'll be fun!

This series, like cup weekend, is open to any make of car.

Yup should be a good time, chances like this at the track are few and far between. :chug:

Yup, it definitely will be. I've been involved in a similar kind of thing once in the past and it was great fun for all who participated. (When I did it (not with MCO), everyone had a passenger!)

With a passenger eh.... Hmm that sounds interesting!!! Maybe we'll have to add that!

Well here is hoping we generate enough interest thing year that we can keep in going from year to year. So get the word out to whoever you think might be interested! On 3 of the 4 races we are already at a point where one more entrant will ensure prize money!

Excited to see you guys out there!

T-14 days to the first race, 4 entrants so far.

More like next year, if budget permits. I've made the decision to reallocate my track budget this year. When I decide something, I rarely change my mind even if a great opportunity like this one comes along! :P

if i'm reading this right... it sounds more like an aggressive lapping day, except that pointing will be used more often

Sort of. It will be a race, timed and everything. The first half hour session will be qualifying. Your grid position for the race will depend on the finish in qualifying. The point by passing heightens the safety level so there is no passing of unaware drivers etc.

hardly call it aggressive, this runs like the Gentlemens Cup weekends. Qualify on speed, no passing till after turn 4 on first lap, point by passing, one point per car, just a few more spots to pass. It ran very smooth and fun last year.

This series looks like it'll be a good substitute for the Novice races that CASC used to run. I wonder if the organizers of this series have thought of discussing with CASC-OR about having these events recognized for holders of Reginal B (Novice) licences for them to get the required number of observed events to upgrade to an A licence? Just a thought. :)

"aggressive lapping" was picked for the lack of vocab

I need more time at bogie but will target this event
Hopefully next year

Hi John:

It has not been discussed yet, great idea though. Who is the right person to approach about this?

I'd guess that Perry Ianuzzi would be the first to contact as he's the current President of CASC-OR. (president@casc.on.ca <president@casc.on.ca>) There would be issues to sort out between CMP/Ottawa Citizen and CASC-OR, such as needing a CASC-OR licenced Steward for the observations, but I'm sure that things could be sorted out if both sides were willing to make any required adaptations.

Such a good event last nite. We qualified with the CMP mustangs, but ran our race separate.
Now that they've seen us run, we will race with the CMP mustangs next time.
There's talk of extending the practice/qualify and race formats to 45min each.

They run short track for these. As awesome as bogie is, that's gotta be the best feature of that track. What a ride.

The CMP mustangs were in the 1:22-1:25 range, Glen with the fastest time of 1:21. They're running falkens.

We qualified in the 1:24s, but got it down to 1:22s in the race, looking for more speed next time :)

The point by passing/blue flagging works really well, only use 9a-10, 14-15 , 16-17, and the front straight.

If you've got experience lapping bogie, you'll do well here. Hope to see a few more of you out there, Next is July 28th.

It was just as much fun as a Time Attack and much closer.
