2009 SoloSprint Canadian Championships - AMS

Postby TedDobbie » Sun Sep 20, 2009 10:48 pm

Four of us from Ontario competed at the national championships, two of us from MCO: Gary Wood RX8, Matthew Clough RX8 (co-driving), Brad Merkel, Corvette (MCO) and me Ted Dobbie, 99 Mustang GT (MCO).

Brad Merkel was running in the 1:18s as was Gary Wood but Gary was slightly faster. Matt was running 1:22s and I was running 1:26s in the first day. All three cars had problems. Brad lost a front wheel bearing and ABS in the second day, a worsening of his condition from Day 1. This led Brad into some very scarey looking braking for which he had a few FWOs, very unlike Brad as we all know. Gary and Matt's RX8 totally lost power on Day 2 probably due to rotor seals burning up. Both Brad and Gary withdrew their car on Day 2.

My situation didn't look at all promising as I lost two alternators, a battery and a front brake hose on the practice and learning sessions on Fri. As a result of the excellent help I received from our Atlantic competitors and hosts, I was able to get the only rebuilt alternator for a 4.6 East of Montreal, and a Bullit brake hose that got me through the rest of the weekend. As a result, I was able to put one good run together on Day 2, 1:21.105, fast enough that I won my GT1 class on Day 2. Results can be found at http://www.beyondtheapex.ca/solosprint/ ... esults.pdf

Our hosts were excellent, the track very technical and much faster than I thought it would be, and the weather was sunny and quite warm. A great experience in all, one that I would like to repeat at AMS Scubenacadie, NS.

Please take a moment to check out the AMS website at http://www.armsinc.ca/ and join the club on line to see what they are all about and what they are doing. Very impressive.

Regards,

Ted
