Fuel Cell

Howdy,

I'm just looking for a bit more of an explanation for fuel cells for solo 1. Would anyone be able to offer a contact where I can ask a few questions?

Your best bet is the rulebook (I'm assuming you've already checked that out), and if that doesn't answer your questions then post on the CASC website in the solosprint forum: http://www.casc.on.ca/

Rules on cells are changing for 2009.

I don't have the draft wording in front of me, but it is to cover off the situation where someone could 'game' the classification rules by installing a monster fuel cell and/or multiple fuel cells.

As an aside, note that I am talking about the CASC-OR rules. What will be done, if anything, for the Nationals (ASN Canada FIA rules) is unknown.

Not sure what can be gained in a solo sprint car by installing a monster fuel cell. Maybe a little weee-weee 2 gallon one, enough for the 4 laps at a time... but a monster cell for solosprint?

Exactly. Anyone who wants to win will run as little fuel as practical.

However, if you run something like your racecar in SoloSprint, you can elect to be classed, in part, on the basis of the car's actual weight. In order for the weight to be comparable with a stock car's curb weight, the fuel cell must be full. If one has, say, two 130-litre fuel cells installed in a car that originally came with a 65-litre tank, then that's a lot of additional weight for classification - maybe enough to drop you a couple classes.

... and then run what you think is just enough for your runs. A big advantage as fuel weighs, but if you miscalculate it can come back to haunt you ... don't ask me how I know.

So, no change in fuel cell regs, but in weighing the vehicle:

If an OE fuel tank has been replaced with a fuel tank of greater than OE capacity, the weighing shall be performed with not more than maximum
OE fuel capacity in the non-OE tank.
