Open Road Rally ORRC - Nov 1, 2009

Postby robert_ve3vpl on Wed Sep 16, 2009 7:51 am

This is to announce the ORR ORRC event to be held on Sunday November 1, 2009. This is a dual status event. It is the 5th and last event in the 2009 Open Road Rally club series at MCO. The the first 4 events were held during the summer, and the series is now in its Targa Newfoundland break. The event is also part of the Ontario Road Rally Championship series, the 7th of 8 events in 2009.

The rally will start/finish in Perth, Ontario, the exact location will be announced soon. Registration is at 9:30 am, and car zero starts at 11:00 am. The rally will be about 200 kms in length, roughly 4 hours driving time, no mid-rally break is planned. The instructions will be simple distance-to-turns or Tulips or simple variations thereof, perhaps including non-accumulative distances, but route-finding will not be tricky. No one should get lost. All classes will receive the same route book, although I am considering including some timing complications in Expert class to prevent navigator atrophy. The Novice and Expert classes of the ORR club series line up with normal ORRC Expert and Novice classes. There will also be an ORRC Intermediate class though there have been very few entries in it this year, so its inclusion may be moot.

The final entry fee has not been determined but will be in line with other events.

I don't anticipate any special requirements for the rally but you should have compasses, protractor, calculators, etc. Note that it would be unusual to have snow in this area on November 1, but we will have had cold damp or wet nights, and the roads could easily be leaf covered if winds have been low.

Trust me, you will have a nice drive.

The start/finish of the ORR ORRC on November 1 will be at The Perth Restaurant, 23 Gore in Perth. This is just south of Foster on the east side of the road. There is a separate eating area at the rear of the restaurant reserved for our use. As stated in the first post, registration will open at 9:30 am, car zero starts at 11:00 am from the rear parking lot.

Please see the following detailed maps of Perth and the restaurant parking lot. See you then.

This is a reminder that TAs for this event will be scored using the normal ORRC rules. That is, the first usage will be "free" but each subsequent usage of a TA will incur additional 0.5 penalty in addition to whatever other timing penalties are incurred at that CP.

I have completed the route instructions and will be sending them to Glen soon for greening. I eventually decided on using the same route book for all classes. Timing was arrived at in the following way. The route was measured by Jaak and me in his Explorer. We covered the distance in about 3 hour 50 min, and that included time stopped at CP locations taking photos, writing down info, etc., (plus, we got lost once leaving Perth, my fault) so that drive simulated competition closely. Jaak never took any chances and I never came close to being seasick in the truck. In the final timing, car zero will be on the road for approx 4 hours. The total distance is almost exactly 200 kms. It will not be a hurried drive, nor can you dawdle, but you will enjoy some of the nicest roads in the province. The route never passes through or even close to built-up areas (but there are 2 cottagey Quiet Zones) so be sure to FILL YOUR TANK before starting. There are plenty of petrol stations in Perth along highway 7.

We're looking forward to event, Robert! It'll be nice to see some of the MCO rally folk again, too. (Well, other than Brownhill and Corbett who we just saw this weekend as they just finished a respectable 4th at President's Prize!)

Edit: Uhmm... that doesn't sound right. We're ALWAYS happy to see Brownhill & Corbett! :chug:

Anything special us westerners should know before we hike out there? e.g.: Are triangles required? M+S tire requirement? Does the scorer require cash bribes, or are homemade brownies okay? :D

BTW, have you decided on how much you're charging? A couple of newcomers want to know. The ORRC median fee this year has been about $45 per car.

I'll be new and would also like how much it will cost us (Driver and myself) to do the rally!

I'll be there for sure! And also part of NCSC and SPDA!

I have been away on vacation and only just noticed this thread with some questions for me. Thanks Jeannie for answering the entry fee question.

As for special requirements, there are none, other than what is normally required in an ORRC. You should always have triangles, compasses (both kinds), protractors, rulers, calculators, etc. You should always have everything because you never know. Duct tape too.

We are using two short No Winter Maintenance roads but they're cottage roads and in good shape. They're talking showers so it will be muddy, but no bogs to dig out of. The route was designed so a Beginner in a minivan could finish.

All classes will receive the exact same instructions, just like last year. I resisted the urge to include Expert-only timing nightmares. No one should get lost. If you get lost, you'lll never live it down, :)

See you Sunday.

The online registrations are starting to come in, and I thank those of you who are registering in advance. This allows me to make up a list, and saves you from having to fill in a form at Sunday registration. I will list the first names here, once I've printed off the forms.

See you all soon! Glad you're back, Robert. ;)

Once again who do I see / where do I go to work this event? My navigator/driver (depending on his mood) ;) can't make it, he is having minor eye surgery on Thursday and looking around a whole lot might be painful.

Thanks,

Hi James,

We have already received all the workers we need for the ORR ORRC, so I didn't put out a public call. Basically, all the folks that had been working the ORRs all season offered their services and we're ok. Thanks very much for offering, enjoy the day off. :)

James, why not get yourself a replacement navigator and come out and enjoy yourselves?

Best wishes to your Dad -- hope he feels better soon.

And thanks for thinking of working!

Hi Jeannie, a lot of competitors don't like using the online form with their driver's license because it's not secure.

We have one other SPDA Toronto team coming out; Trevor and Ted. Ted's sick right now, but he's defending his championship so I think he'll be there come hell or high water.

Plus up to three other possible SPDA Ottawa teams who will be out for their first nav rally. I'm sure they'll appreciate an instruction style review from Master Robert or Master Ferdinand before the rally starts.

It's not clear how to sign up. I found this link on the Subaru forum and it seems to have worked for me.

Sam and I will be there. The Jetta is ready and the computer has the latest version of the software loaded!

I would rather not fill in an unsecure form. Will it help to print it and arrive with it filled in?

Sorry, there will be no brownies stapled to the back!

So we have four teams registered and paid up. We also have Peter/Chuck, Chris/Sam, Trevor/Ted and some SPDA'ers from the Toronto area who intend to register on-site tomorrow. Good stuff!

Don't eat too much sugar tonight, eh. :P And enjoy your extra hour to sleep in.

See you in Perth, tomorrow.
