MCO Rallycross: Interest and Discussion

Postby ibeljin » 2016.11.24 12:33:45 PM

Hi guys, I know this topic has been opened once before but I just wanted to bring it to people's attention once again.
There is some talk about tentatively organizing and running some rallycross events this coming summer to build more interest in rally and provide a grassroots platform for people to start from.

Snowcross is a great way to learn how to slide a car around and maintain control, but it's seasonal and dependent on cold weather. Using the same model as autocross and snowcross, perhaps we use rallycross as another low cost stepping stone.

Running a rallysprint event has its own set of a challenges such as finding a venue and keeping the track groomed. Anybody who's done the MLRC rallycross in Bancroft knows how rutted it can get.

If there's enough interest, the time to start thinking about it sooner rather than later

I think everyone . . . well, a lot of people, would love to do rallycross. The challenges are this: find an organizer; find a venue; and get competitors.

Finding a venue is harder than you'd think. The last time we ran a rallycross series, we had a wet summer and the series lost money. The MCO President (this is a few years back) refused to allow another series the next year. But it didn't matter because we lost the organizer too, and no one else stepped up.

You also mentioned rally sprint. We already have ideas for a rally sprint, possibly tied in with next year's LHFR. Or, it could be run as a stand-alone event. We need to get more input from rally officials before making a decision. We'd probably get more competitors if it ran on its own. Rally sprint is run on roads, while rallycross is run at a closed venue, much like autocross.

If you have ideas, please contact Mike Koch, the Rally rep, and/or come to a meeting with some ideas.

woops, I think I meant to say rallycross not rallysprint my brain is full of rally stuff at the moment.

In any case I do agree that the venue is a key piece of the puzzle which is why I wanted to see if there are any other people on the club which would be interested if we decided to take some steps to organizing these events. If there's enough push for it the club might consider it.

There are higher costs to run compared to autocross or snowcross which is why the initial turnout for the season could make or break the decision to run, similar to what you mentioned happened last time

The silver lining is that giving people an outlet to experience driving on gravel without the investment of a cage, safety equipment, or even a trailer, could lead to more people making that transition

I don't think anyone refused further events due to cost but I stopped organizing to do other things and no one was available to take up the slack. Costs don't need to be very high, for one these events can use the same insurance as autox and snowx. Cones, trailer and other hardware the club already has. Go old school with stop watches, KISS. Venue is the challenge. Maybe we dig something up at bogie. Augusta Motorsports park is where we previously played.

Actually, the president at the time did refuse his support, Greg. I was Rally rep at the time and remember the frustration (not at you).

Ivan, don't guess at the costs. If someone is interested in pursuing this, they'll need to do research and come to the Rally Group with hard facts. Before anything is pitched to the BOD, it must be fully researched.

So, are you game? You know we're available for discussion, but not on Tall Pines weekend! :rally:

Is there more to it than finding a deserted piece of land we are allowed to use?

Environmental concerns, noise by-laws etc...

It's great to see interest in getting back into Rallycross. I can report that a number of Board members are hoping to attend the next Rally Group meeting.

When is the next rally group meeting for those interested in attending? The last one would have fallen on the day of the AGM and I can't see anything scheduled in the calendar

The rally crowd is engaged at Tall Pines this weekend, so there probably won't be a response until next week.

I'd love to see some rallyX in the Ottawa area. Any ideas for a location? I've organized a few Lanark events and would be happy to help with a RallyX.

We'll figure out when the next rally group meeting is a make sure that it's posted here.

Cheers,
Darryl

Last I heard, there was talk of a potential venue somewhere in Kemptville. There were some ideas that it could potentially be run at Capital City as well.

If run at capital, all the ice racing cars which were barely used this winter could be put to some use.

I'd be all in on RallyX provided the same cars/rules applied over from SnowX. (street cars, no cage)

As long as the speeds are low enough a cage shouldn't be necessary. The club which organizes rallycross in Bancroft doesn't mandate the use of a cage. Would be kinda cool to have a new series to race!

I'd be all in to help out provided I could show up and run a street car. I''ve got the perfect car for it too

Augusta Motorsports park seems to still be open and they have enough open space to potentially run a rallycross.

Has MCO run rallycross here once before?

Yes we ran there for 2 ... maybe 3 years.

Attendance was always low though unfortunately.

But had a blast there for sure.

Do you guys already have insurance you can provide that covers the event? Is the main issue finding the venue? Because I MAY have something.

The club has insurance available to cover rallyx, run the same way as autox and snowx are.

Venue is a major key, but so is budgeting and a plan, and someone to put it all into place.

Ivan has expressed his interest in leading a rallyx return to MCO, and if you have an option for a venue, you two could potentially get something going!

Fall is a perfect time, many other disciplines are done for the year, and lots of folks waiting for the ice racing season to start.

For all intents and purposes, Snowcross is considered Rallycross... and it is looking for a lead organizer for this coming winter.

Would be a great opportunity for the any potential Rallycross organizers to get their feet wet, with an already established and working model complete with a winter venue, volunteer base and assistance from the prior organizer. ;)

One could easily transform the existing Snowcross series into a year-long Rallycross series... would simply need (a) spring/summer/fall venue(s).
