S2000 fuel leak?

Postby dbg » Sun May 20, 2012 1:21 pm

At the school I got an occasional whiff of gasoline while idling with the to down. Also my garage smells of gasoline very slightly. No obvious signs of leaking liquids, so it must be a very small amount.

Any known issues with S2000 fuel systems? Suggestions on where to check?

Thanks

Spidey-sense doesn't tingle...

Can you trace the line from the front to back and not see anything obvious?

If you disassemble the interior behind the drivers seat (sounds scary but is trivial once you've done it a few times) you can access the top of the fuel pump assembly. May be worth a look.

Do you have tools to check fuel line pressure? If you put the gauge on and it bleeds off pressure over a period of time then either the check valve in the fuel pump is bleeding back to the tank (but would not explain the smell) or there is a leak elsewhere.

My gut says inspect where the injectors mount to the fuel rail and then the fuel pump...

Or just take it to Ralf and the b'ys. :)

Fuel tank full or empty?

Possible evaporative system issue especially if tank nearer to full or gas has been sloshing around..

Tank was half full. I was at the MCO Advanced Driving School when we noticed the smell... there might be some small chance of sloshing. :P

I didn't smell anything when I "nosed about" under the hood. No visible sign of leakage around the fuel injector assembly, but I didn't dig into it.

If the fuel pump assembly is behind the driver's seat, and the leak was there, that might explain why the smell was present in the cabin.

Hmm... Ralph's guys had to disassemble the interior install the roll bar. Maybe the fuel pump assembly got bumped during installation.

The fuel pump is behind the seat but it is in the gas tank, behind the seat but it is possible something got slightly loose.

Okay, new info. Check Engine light came on recently. davet82 suggested I get a cheap odbii reader and check it out.

I was half expecting the fuel cap thing, which would have explained the smell... would have been P1456. Nope, it was P1457.

P1457 EVAP Emission Control System Leak Detected (Control Canister System)

Scrounging around online, it is suggested that the following parts need replacement:

17012-S01-A00 VALVE SET, BYPASS SOLENOID $64.00
17012-S10-L00 VALVE SET, SOLENOID $71.51

Maybe I should try resetting it first, to see if it comes back on.

If you are getting a smell I would investigate the source and go from there.

Well it happened during the autocross school, and has not repeated since.

that P1457 CEL comes up in a few threads on the S2ki boards

looks like you found the same info, regarding the two parts that could be the cause of the CEL

if the car is performing fine, and the CEL codes are emission related.. i wouldn't be overly concerned
just keep the cheap OBD II scanner and smart phone handy

if the car is misfiring, or throwing other performance related codes.. then id look into it further

in a convert.. you smell everything.. fresh cut grass, the car two cars up with a smoker... everything
no more mods... just maintenance
