Pre-fab cages not 'legal'?

Postby kc-gt4 » Mon May 19, 2008 2:26 pm

I'm thinking about getting a Cusco pre-fabricated roll cage, but I've heard through the grapevine that most (if not all) race organizers won't allow prefab as they can possibly cause more harm than good. Is this the case?

It depends... some are approved... but it depends... is it certified by FIA? if yes, usually has a # on it...

Is this for road racing? or for lapping? Are you thinking of a bolt-in or welded in? You need to discuss with the sanctioning body and go into details with them... better now than finding out you can't use it.

I had my 4pt roll bar done Stu Trudel 613-833-5482. He's out in Cumberland Village. He's done LOTS of approved roll cages from road racing in Ontario touring champ to the CDN pro rallying.

you sure you want a cusco one? (I've seen a few 240 ones the welds and workmanship is iffy)

I'm 99.9% sure that these guys are scca/casc friendly

Read the rules first for any sanctioning body whom with you will participate with. If it meets the rules, then you should be okay. Most have rules that dictate how bolt in cages are to be fabricated, their attachment, etc. Just check the rules, and if you have questions for CASC-OR related cages you can always post on the CASC-OR forums, Dave King would be most likely to answer. Just make sure that you have all the specs on the bar, the tubing type, wall thickness, pad sizes, etc. Alternatively, I suppose one could email the manufacturer of what you are interested in installing the CASC-OR rules, etc, and see what they say about if their product meets those rules as well.

The car is set mainly for autocross/snowcross and the occasional rally. The Cusco cage in question is a bolt-in, but I'd probably spot weld it on top of that to be sure. Thanks for the hookup, I'll certainly give him a call before I put any money down.

for those events, it's a waste of $$.. i wouldn't bother with the cage.

If you were slowly prepping for pro rallies, then I'd say yes but not the cusco cage unless it meets CDN rules... but also, I wouldn't want to drive a car on the street with a full cage either.

You don't need a cage for autocross/snowcross, OEM rollover protection is fine. I'm pretty sure that's true for most amateur rally stuff too.

If anything having a full cage is bad for safety unless you're full restrained in a harness, wearing a SA rated helmet ALL the time and have the proper foam padding on all the bars. The biggest danger is bangging your head on the cage bars in a regular non-rollover accident, or just normal hard driving.
