Wheel Advice?

Postby shwafia » Tue Jan 11, 2011 4:25 pm

Hey Everyone,

I'm looking for some help deciding on a set of rims to buy. Specifically I'm looking at 17x8 and 17x9 rims, leaning towards the wider side, since they will be a track dedicated set, so 17x9 +35 to be exact.

I've been looking a lot at the Enkei RPF1's and I really like them, however, it appears that they're not easy to find. The newer Enkei PF01's are nice as well. They're not exactly the size I need, but I believe I could make them work.

Does anyone have any good advice for an affordable, light, track wheel? Something in the same price range as the rims mentioned above (or cheaper)?

Am I putting too much importance on weight?

Cheers,
Aaron

Carl at Perry Performance and Competition (Club Sponsor) sourced some DAI Monoblocks 17x7 for my SiR a couple of years ago. Resonally priced and 16lbs per corner, I've been quite happy with them.

Ring him up and see what he can get...

By 'easy to find', I assume you're looking for a used set or something?

A better question would be, why are you going with a 17" wheel if you want light? Do you have brakes preventing you from using a smaller size?

My guess is tire sizes. Not much available in terms of street tires over 225 mm width in anything less than a 17" rim.

If Carl at Perry can't get them for you, then check Tire Rack. They sell the RPF1 17x9 (15.5 lb) for $250 each. I think you'll be hard pressed to find a lighter wheel for less money in that size.

Slap some 255 width star specs on there and you're laughing. Someone on here might care to comment on such a setup.

RSX' can fit tires that wide? I'm jealous... Protegés suck for getting fat tires within our wheel wells. Getting anything bigger then a 225 means super stiff suspension, and usually some rolling...

17x9 +35 (5x114.3 bolt pattern)

that sounds like any wheel from mustangs 99-04. cobra are 17x9, GT 17x8.. offsets are 24 to 30 I think.

or even DSM wheels.

these are cheap options, but also heavy.

if you go 17x9, why not run a 275.

I've picked up a set of PF01's last summer and like them a great deal. If your bolt pattern is 4x100, then I think that you are stuck with 17x7 in either the RPF01 or PF01. However, you could do a 16x8 in either of these though.

I ended up ordering through Tire Rack as they were the cheapest at the time.

Not necessarily used, but that would be the first choice to save on the cost.

Brakes and as Jamie said, the tire options are better with the 17s.

Well, that is what I'm thinking of, but not quite that wide. Was thinking more 245's, but I do know 255's would fit.

That is the set I'm looking at right now. The price is good, but I'm a little concerned about duty and all the extra fees by the time I get it to my door. Can anyone comment on this from previous experience ordering from TireRack? Jordan?

My bolt pattern is 5x114.3, so I do have the option of the PF01's in 17x8.5. That is on my list right now, but I would prefer the 9" wide for the option of running a wider tire.

your best bet is to ship to the UPS store in ogdensburg and drive down. If you have the tires already mounted on the rims, they should only charge you $5/wheel combo for storage.

You'll pay duty on the tires if they weren't manufactured in the US - if you want to know how much, do the shipping calculator from tirerack and they break down all the costs. And you'll obviously have to pay the canadian sales tax.

This is going to sound stupid, but does anyone know how I can order a set of rims on Tire Rack without entering in a car? The wheels I want aren't recommended for my stock vehicle, so the site doesn't allow me to choose them. I just want to order a set of wheels and tires without having to be forced to pick a vehicle! :)

P.S. The tires they let me, the rims don't appear to work the same way. So annoying.

Just find the wheel by brand/model and order. You're not forced to enter a car.

Unless I'm completely crazy (not entirely out of the question), you actually can't buy rims without entering in a car. Tires you can.

Custom applications? If you have a custom fitment, our sales specialists will gather the information needed to verify fitment and will then confer with our fitment engineers to determine the selection of wheels available for your custom vehicle. Contact Tire Rack

for wheels/tires, they charge a $5 storage fee per wheel/tire, and $5 for every week of holding. If the tires are mounted on the rims, I believe they will still only charge $5.

I was in the store a few days ago and let me tell you that it inspires a lot more confidence than the old setup! Only thing that still kinda bothers me is that they leave there list right there on the counter and never ask for ID. So if you see someone's name you can still claim you're them and take their packages...

Yeah, this is why I use the Corporate Centre in spite of having "free" access to the UPS Store with my OVO membership.

I generally prefer the Corp Centre as well.

My biggest issues with them are their hours of operation, and the fact they take US Cash only.
