track width vs overall width?

Postby gregor » Thu Jan 12, 2012 5:55 pm

do I have this right.

Track width ( as advertised by a manufacturer ) is from the center of a tire to the center of the other tire, right?

Not measured from the outside of the tires

Overall width is a exterior dimensions, right?

Correct.

To further confuse things there is also the WMS-to-WMS measurement. WMS is the wheel mount surface.

WMS is fixed for given axle configuration. Overall width and track width can change with different wheel backspace/offset.

Yes, and wheelbase is measured from the centre of the front wheel to the centre of the rear wheel on the same side of the car.

The usual restrictor on a trailer is the car body width. The fenders can be very hard on fender flares and such.
