Autocross saved two lives today.

Postby mphysk » Thu Mar 22, 2012 9:19 am

driving my son to daycare today, on an 80km/h road, at an intersection (stop sign for crosswise traffic, none for me)

http://maps.google.ca/?ll=45.047542,-74 ... .23,,0,0.6

a transport is barreling east right through the intersection going quite fast with no intent of stopping.

had i paused for a split second or braked we would have been very smushed. autocross reflexes kicked in and i hammered on the gas and went into the oncoming lane, transport missed us by inches.

you don't realize it.. but you're in shock (seriously)

1000ths of a second, in our autox world makes a huge difference in 1st or 2nd place..
in the real world a few 1000ths of a second and
the outcome could have been horrific!

when you face something major where you have to react.. time slows down, and your brain goes into refrence mode
and you react

when you have nothing to reference back to.. that hesitation, not knowing what you should do plays a huge in the outcome

glad you and Jacob have a story to share

Another plus for driver training vs. driver "education." Glad you and your son are OK, Mike. I thank my Dad and racing for my driver training or I would probably have been dead more than five decades ago. :o

Glad you're both okay Mike!!

That intersection is definitely super sketchy.. all the dump trucks coming across there are terrible!

Glad to hear that you two are unscathed. A world without Physks would suck.
