Tech Questions

The engine in my E 30 318is (M42) is down on compression in 2 cylinders. I have been unable to locate a replacement.
I have found a M44 from an E 36 318 - would this be considered a replacement or a swap? Would it cost 7 points as a swap?

If I put in a 2.5 six cylinder and transmission, would my car be classed as an 325 or as a 318 + 7 for the engine swap, +3 for transmission (non stock gearing)?

Are there any other options?

It would also need a front sub frame, anyone know where to find one?

Should I park the car and autocross a 2003 WRX ?

John, ignore the classing and put whatever engine you want in the car that will make you happy. M52, LS1? ;)

FWIW, IIRC your car will always be a 318 with a swap regardless of what other equivalent models were out there.

It would be classed as a running car, unlike mine.

John, if you put in the M44 engine, I would consider that close enough to the M42 engine to not incur points. If you go up to a 6 cylinder BMW engine then you would either take the engine swap or move to the new base class of the donor car.

I've heard Kenny U-pull has a lot of e30 chassis' lying around, I'm sure you could find a subframe!


I think, realistically, the ONLY option is that you swap in an LS1.

Definitely!! Now that that's settled, got any Hoosier's for sale?!

There were 2 e30's in decent shape at Kenny UPull in Ottawa last time I was there (~3 Weeks ago...). One was a 325i with 187K on it and silly clean - appeared to have no winters. It had the full engine there last time I checked.

In any case, good luck getting it buttoned up for the season!
