Calabogie has been laser scanned and is heading to rFactor!

Postby Dieselshark » Mon Jun 23, 2008 3:22 pm

I was reading the latest autosimsport magazine and i read that the track of CMP has been laser scanned by a company named Terrapoint and will be released for rFactor.
http://www.autosimsport.net/ (pages 71-78)
It was used at the Canadian Motorsport Expo for a competition:

Great news! I've been looking forward to a virtual version of CMP for a long time.

Okay... that was back in march... any idea when the track will be made available?

I can wait to get virtually spanked by the track rather than the usual real spanking.

I'd really like to get this so I can get my Dad driving on it... then he can figure out the track before taking the C4S on it.

Not sure what happened there but GPL is an old game now and has been greatly eclipsed by GTR2 and RFactor. Its better on RFactor to do it.

Autosimsport is a great magazine even if you're not that into sims. 150+ well-written pages in the current issue ...

I guess it's up to the owners of the track to decide when to release it to the public. Does anyone here excel at flattery and feel like writing an email?

I, and one other person now have the beta version of CMP. It is loadable and driveable but has issues to be completed. We are trying to find a way to complete it through our own resources but if it fails we may need the services of a track builder. If anyone has experience with this post here and I'll get back to you later. Modding cars is not what its about. Track building software or coding experience is necessary.

Is this for the GP version ?

I have some software coding experience...
Its usually ends up being more about being stuborn and debugging skill...

Out of curiosity, are you talking about the laser scanned version for rFactor or the Grand Prix Legends version that has been in development for years?

Both. The Gpl one stalled out and I don't exactly know why. I know the person who was doing it and at one point I had the beta version and tested it. I didn't bother to follow up on it because gpl , although the best sim of its time and beyond, has really been eclipsed by GTR2 and RFactor. Our league actually still races both. http://users.hfx.eastlink.ca/~mackaypenny/gplreg.html Its a real PITA to install because of all the patches, rasterizers, mods, and server engines.

The track we're working with is CMP for RFactor. It actually works right now. I ran laps in a radical in it the other day. It needs peripheral work like paddock, track textures, lighting, etc etc. Hopefully we can get it into a V1. release. Something like this should not be on a shelf, or in someones computer documents.

This might be a long shot, but Gilles "The Wall" Benoit did the excellent Trois Rivieres track for rFactor.

He doesn't post often but still visits RSC.

There is also a tool that could be used to create and edit tracks. It's called Bob's Track Builder:

Our work with the lazer scan Calabogie Motorsports track for RFactor has stalled out. If anyone can help us with completing this track post here please.

I have 3DSMax, Solidworks, Rhino, Maxwell /+ rendering experience. I can take a look and see what the track needs to complete. I don't have experience with RFactor, I'll get ahold of it and have a look.

I guess my biggest question is do you have pictures of the paddock areas? Any texture pictures of the track / scenery / buildings? Has there been any 3D Modeling of the buidings?

Thanks, Greg

I'm sure may photos of the paddock could be found and I could supply you with in car video from both the full and east tracks. I also expect 303imaging would be willing to provide many photos, assuming a mutually beneficial agreement was in place.

Right now there are no finished buildings. Race control is a portable trailer at the end of the pit lane. The main building is still being worked on this fall. Certainly not anything worth trying to include on the track. Though, one may be able to get images of the proposed structures from Calabogie

Sorry, this is a late reply since I don't get to this forum too often, but I have some photos that may be useful.

Back in June of 2007, Don Yourth (creator of the GPL beta), Bob Simpson and myself went to Calabogie to get data for Don's project. We covered the pit area and during the lunch break went around the track, stopping often and I took shots forward, backward and to each side. Unfortunately we only got about halfway around during the time available. Anyway, if it would help with the rFactor project, here's an album of 186 shots: http://www.designamatic.com/GraphicsGPL ... index.html

I also have a zip of another couple of dozen shots I took earlier here: http://downloads.designamatic.com/Calab ... nShots.zip (9.5 MB) These concentrate on paddock area objects, e.g. medical trailer, emergency truck with "Calabogie" on the side, close-ups of curbing, etc. I tried to get square-on shots wherever possible to aid in making textures.

Finally, here are three shots of the "quarry" walls. These were taken from the east end of the paddock, I couldn't get out on track to take decent square-on shots, but they may still be useful for texturing purposes after some severe PhotoShopping. ;)

If these would help with the rFactor Calabogie project, feel free to download and use any of my images.

I know Don well, he sim raced in our league. I actually had his GPL calabogie beta version for testing. He's sort of disappeared lately. The RFactor Calabogie track is now in the hands of someone and being worked on. If you think you could help him with it let me know and I'll send you a PM with his phone number.
