My Driving Rig

Postby dexatron » Tue Dec 16, 2008 4:14 pm

Hi,

Here's what I use to drive sims. I made this up several years ago. Took an old rally car seat and made a frame out of 1" tubing. It makes driving sims alot of fun. Anyone else make up a driving rig?

No racing chair or rig. I don't think the wife would appreciate it if if I set up a racing chair on a frame in the den, both of our computers are in the same office - bit i works well enough for racing sims. The steering wheel never comes down. The Richeleu keyboard tray is the heat. Slides right out of the way when driving, and when working it can be repositioned very quickly and it is very adjustable. The computer is pulled out so you can see the sexy case...

When putting my racecar back together after working on it, it's always lighter - for some reason I always have parts leftover on the workbench.

Greg, that looks kick ass! My plan for this winter is to put the 'guppysim' on castors and be able to wheel it in front of my projector screen....

I love the *Exhaust " on the Guppy Sim - I had some of those mounted on the MINI at one of the meets.

I couldn't decide where i liked em better - so I stuck Magnet on the back to make em easier to move.
I think they looked better on the Hood...

If I had the time and a bit of money, I think it would be cool to get the front end of a F1600 and make a nice sim cockpit. Something that actually looks like a racecar. Hmmm... maybe when Matt has a spare nose cone that he's not going to repair to put back on a Radical, but could be repaired to look nice enough for a sim cockpit would be cool too. Hmmm...

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing! It's great to see so many other sim enthusiasts.

I'm almost finished building a CNC router table (11x6 feet) so I'm hoping to design up one of those wood cutout kits like they sell for big bucks and make a low cost plywood kit!

Here is mine. For some reason, my steering wheel only turns left.

How stable is the steering wheel? Does it have much flex/play?

It's very stable. There is no flex or wobble. The only problem is that the screws that control the angle of the steering wheel start to get loose after a few hours of spirited driving. That's nothing that a bottle of Lock-Tite can't fix. The main advantage of the Playseat Evolution is that it's easy to take apart and the seat folds easily. That makes it ideal for Lan partys or when space is limited in the appartment.

I'm surprised that nobody has commented yet on the angle of my monitor.

I use it for the Motec. It displays all the telemetry on the secondary screen (my 22" lcd in this case).

Brilliant!!! Great idea. I was thinking of some way to do the same thing on a smaller scale. I recently purchased a samsung digital picture frame which has a nice side feature of being able to be used as a monitor via USB. I was trying to figure out a way to do exactly what you're doing with this in rFactor but I've not figured out how to get the LCD on a seperate screen...
