Miata Clutch install anyone?

Postby eyemaster » Mon Mar 09, 2009 1:45 pm

Alright, I got my clutch stuff sitting in my dining room.

All I need now is to get it installed. I have no garage so I can't do it myself, not even sure I could. Is there any interests or suggestions? :) Anyone feel like playing with this? Or any shop suggestions?

I don't even know how much it would cost in a shop, I didn't check yet since I'm not in a hurry. Mine works, it's just plagued with the clutch shudder.

Easy stuff... you will need an impact.

Jack car on four solid stands, undo PPF, remove driveshaft, remove clutch slave cylinder, remove exhaust if you want more room. The exhaust is optionnal but it helps alot.

Make sure you have something to support the motor to not have the motor tilt back and crush the coil packs on the firewall. It's a good idea to remove them, it will allow the motor/tranny to tilt a little further back giving more room for the top bolt that hold the tranny.

You will need 2-3 extensions to reach the bolts on top of the tranny, the rest are easy. Support the tranny, slide it out, change clutch, it's a good idea to change the rear crankshaft seal at the same time while you are there.

Off the top of my head that's about it.

if you have time on you hands, you can do it with a buddy

but Ralf and George did my tranny swap (when my tranny went clack clack at event 10) with no issues

give Ralf a call

Maybe I'll wait until I buy the exhaust system and do both at once...
I wonder if the rear seal came in the Happy Meal kit I got? I know I got 2 bearing looking things.

Sounds pretty easy. Too bad I'm not setup to work under a car.

if it's the kit i'm thinking:

-clutch
-pressure plate
-pilot bearing
-release bearing
-alignment tool

on your there's a bunch of bracing that has to be removed though

and get the exhaust you want, and do em both at the same time

Yes, that bracing is where I think I'll have more trouble (if doing it with a bud). I'm sure those bolts are all rusted on tight.

Ahhh, decisions decisions...

New flywheel is included with the clutch kit... so I won't be getting the old one machined. :) I don't have to get the new one machined, do I?

Garage size? What garage, I don't have that, which is why I can't do it myself in the first place. Oh how I wish I could just leave my car in pieces for a week while I worked on it.

Right now, the car ain't moving. My Slave and / or my Master clutch cylinder failed 2 weeks ago. I replaced the slave, bled it out and probably still have air in the system. I've got the master on order and will be here hopefully before weekend. I'm out of brake fluid so I gotta get me some more. Once I've bled the system and it's working again, I'm replacing it with ATE Superblue, but I also have to go find me some... Then, I can contemplate changing the clutch again.

I can offer my garage for working. It is 21x28 with compressor, jack stands, music and most importantly heat. We would need to arrange a time, but pretty much only weekends.

My garage is small (since I have been downsized  ) and the only week-end I have available between now and May is the one before Calabogie lapping day making it quite tight if anything went wrong

Wow, Thanks Bruce! And Luc too! I'll see if it's possible to do it before the 1st of May (Calabogie) but it's not looking good for that. Unless I replace my Master Cyl and see that my car isn't shifting because of something internal... then I'll have to check my options!

Where is your garage Bruce? :)

My garage is attached to my house :D

The house is technically located in Carp, but is 5 min from west Kanata. If you would like use of it, it will need to be booked ahead of time. Between my car projects and house projects my time will book up.

Well, I had to give up on doing the clutch myself last weekend. Got all the framing out of the way, but couldn't get that 1 exhaust bolt off. It's at Frisby Tire on Industrial right now. They do good jobs I hear. :)
